About Andrea Mantegna: The Italian artist, Andrea Mantegna was born in Isola di Carturo, close to Padua in the Republic of Venice, second son of a carpenter, Biagio. Andrea Mantegna seems to have been influenced by his old preceptor's strictures and the later subjects, from the legend of St Christopher, combine with his other excellences more of natural character and vivacity.
